What Is the PSL Scale?
A score out of 8, with the measurements and limits explained.
The PSL scale is an informal way to rate facial attractiveness that grew out of online appearance discussions. There is no official scoring standard: different communities and tools use different ranges, criteria and tier names.
TryPSL is a free PSL calculator that uses a 1–8 scale. It measures facial proportions in a photo and combines four geometry scores using a published formula. The result describes how those measurements fit our scoring rules; it does not tell you your rank in the population.
Lighting, head angle, expression and camera distance can all change the result. Use a clear, front-facing photo and read the photo quality hints alongside your score. PSL is an entertainment estimate, not a scientific or medical assessment.

What Does Your PSL Score Mean?
- Is 4 PSL an average score?
- You may see 4 described as average in community discussions. In TryPSL it falls in the mid range (3.0–4.9). We have not measured a population average, so it cannot tell you how you compare with other people.
- Is 5 PSL a good score?
- 5 is the start of the high range in TryPSL; 5.5 falls in the same band. Look at the four individual scores to understand the result rather than treating one number as a verdict on your appearance.
- What does a 6 PSL score mean?
- 6 is toward the upper end of the high range; the top range starts at 7. A higher combined score does not mean every individual score is high. Check the photo quality hints before comparing results.
Common PSL Tier Terms
You may see these labels in looksmaxxing discussions. The free TryPSL result uses the four bands above. The optional Looksmax report also includes community tier labels, which are explained here for context.
- LTN — Low Tier Normie
- Community shorthand for the lower Normie band.
- MTN — Mid Tier Normie
- Community shorthand for the middle Normie band, often described as average.
- HTN — High Tier Normie
- Community shorthand for the higher Normie band, often described as above average.
- Chadlite / Stacylite
- Labels for the tier below Chad / Stacy, often described as model-like.
- Chad / Stacy
- Labels for a high tier in community charts, typically associated with strong perceived facial harmony.
- True Adam / Eve
- Names used for an idealized ceiling at the very top of some community charts.
Score ranges and labels vary across communities and tools. These terms are not scientific classifications and do not establish a population percentile.

How Is a PSL Score Calculated?
TryPSL finds 478 facial landmarks in your browser and measures the relationships between them. It sends those measurements, without the photo, to our server to calculate four scores and combine them into a PSL score out of 8. The male or female standard you choose affects only the dimorphism score.

Facial harmony
How closely the measured proportions match the formula’s reference values, including the spacing and relative size of facial features.
Facial symmetry
How closely the left and right sides line up. Turning your head affects this measurement, so a front-facing photo works best.
Angularity
The shape of the jaw angle, the straightness of the jawline and the width of the jaw relative to the cheekbones.
Dimorphism
How the measured features fit the male or female reference you select. This choice is a scoring preference, not a determination of your gender.
Photo quality (confidence)
Checks lighting, sharpness, head angle, expression and face size. A low value means you should try a clearer photo. The percentage describes photo quality, not the chance that your PSL score is correct.
Two different scales
PSL Rating vs Face Rating
A face rating often uses a 1–10 scale, with criteria that depend on the person or tool. TryPSL uses a 1–8 PSL scale: 5 starts the high range, so it means something different from the midpoint of a casual 1–10 rating.

Check the scale, criteria and tier boundaries before comparing results from different tools. Rescaling a number from 8 to 10 does not make the underlying assessments equivalent. Use the score bands above to interpret your TryPSL result.

What is the PSL scale?
An informal facial attractiveness rating convention used in looks-focused communities. TryPSL uses a 1–8 scale and four score bands; other tools may use different ranges and criteria.
What is an average PSL score?
There is no verified average across PSL tools. In TryPSL, 4.5 is the numerical midpoint, 3.0–4.9 is the mid range, and 5 starts the high range. These are product score bands, not a measured population average.
Is the PSL scale accurate?
TryPSL measures facial geometry, but its formula has not been validated against human attractiveness ratings. The result depends on the photo and scoring rules, so use it as an entertainment estimate. Photo quality checks help flag unsuitable images; they do not establish score accuracy.
How is a PSL rating calculated?
From 478 facial landmarks detected in your browser: harmony of proportions, symmetry, angularity and dimorphism are scored and combined with a published formula.
Is the PSL score free?
Yes. Your PSL score, score band, four individual scores and photo quality hints are free, with no account needed. The optional Looksmax report adds front and side photo analysis. Its price or available free allowance is shown before you generate it.
Why did my PSL score change?
A different angle, lighting, expression or crop can change the measured proportions. Switching the male or female standard changes the dimorphism score. Algorithm updates can also change results, so compare the same standard and version.
Is my photo uploaded or stored?
For the free score, your photo stays on your device. Measurements are sent to our server for scoring without saving an analysis record. If you generate a Looksmax report, front and side photos are uploaded for AI analysis and can be saved with the report and measurements in your account. Deleting the report or account removes its saved photos and analysis data. The Privacy Policy explains both flows.
What photo should I use for a PSL test?
Use a clear, front-facing photo with your whole face visible, even lighting and a relaxed expression. Keep the camera at eye level, avoid very close selfies and turn off beauty filters. If the photo quality hints flag a problem, retake the photo before comparing scores.
Can I use someone else's photo?
Only with explicit permission from the adult in the photo. You must also be 18 or older. Photos of anyone under 18 are not allowed.
